BBC Radio 2 – ‘Friday Night Is Music Night’

BBC Radio 2 Friday Night Is Music Night Presented by and Starring Clare Teal, Mica Paris, Emma Kershaw Louise Marshall and The BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Richard Balcombe. We’ll be celebrating Ella’s phenomenal career, from her earliest recordings with Chick Webb, through her meeting with the great Norman Granz recording the ‘Songbook’ series (with the likes of Nelson Riddle and Billy May, Paul Weston, Buddy Bregman and Duke Ellington) onto her work with Louis Armstrong and Oscar Peterson.
Ella Fitzgerald is of course a legend. There are jazz singers and then up there all on her own is Ella Fitzgerald. We will be covering story from here earliest days when she determined that she wanted to become a dancer, through the fact that a trip at a talent show meant that she couldn’t dance so decided to sing instead … We’ll follw her into working with the Chick Webb band, being found by the great producer Norman Granz (who established the Verve label – later Universal Jazz) and Ella’s Embarkation with Granz of recording the Songbooks series – each of which is a recording classic. On these she worked with the likes of Nelson Riddle, Duke Ellington, Billy May, Paul Weston and Buddy Bregman – all legends of music … We’ll also include references to some of her contemporarie, Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan in particular.
60 piece BBC Concert Orchestra, conducted by Richard Balcombe and including new arrangements of Ella classics by the country’s leading jazz arranger for Big Band and orchestra, Guy Barker.
